Modern bibliology is closely connected to the science site and "book city" of Leipzig. The "Promotion Prize of Bibliology" emphasizes this importance by annually awarding a master thesis which is sufficient to the highest scientific demands and which is an innovatively productive contribution to its discipline.
The 2,500 Euros award is carried out by the Media Foundation of the Sparkasse Leipzig together with the Institute of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Leipzig. The prize is awarded in memory of Professor Dietrich Kerlen who significantly contributed to the reorganisation and the making of mark of bibliology in Leipzig between 1995 and 2004.
The "Promotion Prize of Bibliology" is directed at graduates from universities and technical colleges of higher education, as well as scientists from the German language region, who have dealt with problems concerning bibliology in their final or qualification assignments (master thesis, B.A. or M.A. exams; though no dissertations!). The assignments must be unpublished. In the broadest sense, bibliology comprises the materiality and the essence of books, as well as social, economic, cultural, judicial and institutional conditions of the manufacturing, distribution and adoption of books in past and present.
A jury decides on the awarding of the prize. The Media Foundation of the Sparkasse Leipzig and the jurors announce this year’s prize and ask for the contribution of relevant master theses until 10 January, 2010.
